10 of the best films and TV shows to watch on Amazon Prime
The Wire (2002)
Set in the American city of Baltimore, boldy hopping subject focus each season, the show plunges you so deeply into the workings of a modern American city blighted with crime, corruption and blind ambition. The immense level of detail is acheived by the writers truly knowing their subject material, with one being a former Baltimore murder detective and the other a journalist at a major Baltimore newspaper. It’s a show so immersive at its core, after a few episodes you feel like you’re living it, even if you aren’t wearing a headset! If you like your characters multifaceted, if you want no clear line between good and evil, if you want the best boxset binge of your life, The Wire is the show for you.
Pacific Rim (2013)
Recently added to Amazon Prime, this is an epic robot blockbuster that fits perfectly in the Warner Bros back catalogue. It will look amazing through your VR headset. Think: huge android machines soaring through the air. Colossal robots pummeling each other with all their iron might. Sparks flying. Fire. Explosions. A high-definition Idris Elba beamed straight through to your front room. World domination never looked so good!
This is a stone-cold thriller set in the vast and freezing expanses of the Finnish wilderness. Hanna (the protagonist) has been raised by her ex-CIA father to be a skilled assassin, and once she’s out in the world it’s her job to track down their sworn enemies and avenge the family. It’s every bit tense as you can imagine: there are hair-raising stand-offs, multiple chase scenes, and some of the best bits of combat we’ve seen in a long time. Plus, the show is soundtracked by The Chemical Brothers, if the adrenaline weren’t pumping enough.
If you’re the least bit familiar with the Rocky films, then we’re sure that you’ll enjoy this one. Sylvester Stallone is still in it, but has taken a back seat to train the prodigal boxer Adonis Johnson (good name, right?). Through your VR headset, Creed will definitely have you on the ropes. It’s so real that you’d be forgiven for dodging Adonis’ jabs yourself!
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (2018)
You couldn’t get much further from John Krasinki’s role in The Office. This is all-out action: in the show, Krasinki plays a CIA analyst pulled from his cosy desk job out into the field where he’s to get to the bottom of some quite suspicious bank transfers. Five explosions, three car chases, and four white-knuckle helicopter rides later, and you’re gripped. Watching this on television is one thing, but through the Oculus Rift is really something else.
It Comes At Night (2017)
If you have the nerve, watch this zombie horror through your Oculus Rift headset (just not at night). Here’s a brief summary of the film: a contagious disease ravages the world and the main cast decamp to a lodge deep in the woods. Their attempt to escape the city, though well-intentioned, actually leaves them more exposed. This is a darkly atmospheric horror that swaps cheap zombie-movie scares for a tension that keeps building and doesn’t let up throughout the whole film. Come nightfall, you should really watch something else.
Gimme Danger (2016)
If you’re a fan of rock music and rock music documentaries, Gimme Danger should definitely be on your watch list. It chronicles the story of Iggy Pop and his band The Stooges as they carve a warpath through the late 60s, 70s, and beyond. It’s high drama pretty much from the off: the wildest shows, stories of life on the road, and insight into their creative process, Gimme Danger paints a picture of a group of no-good punks that you can’t help but like. Admittedly, Iggy Pop’s bare midriff might not be what you want to see in glistening high-definition, but it’s worth a watch nevertheless.
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
More darkly comedic than scary, Shaun of the Dead is a British classic you’ve probably seen a few times already. Not with the Oculus Rift, though! So realistic that the zombies may as well be sitting next to you, Shaun of the Dead is a laugh-out-loud classic that’s aged brilliantly. Hook up your VR and enjoy Simon Pegg in his prime. This may be one of the best shows to watch in the history of VR videos!
Boardwalk Empire (2010)
Boardwalk Empire is a star-studded Prohibition-era drama, with Steve Buscemi in the lead role. The show deals with a whole range of guttersnipes, from lowlife bootleggers to New York mobsters and, as you can imagine, there’s a lot of action. Through the Oculus Rift, you’ll be transported to New York City in the 1920s: from murky backstreets and smoky gambling dens to beautiful ballrooms and stately homes. All the filth and glamour of the Big Apple, beamed in HD to your headset.
For fans of the hit horror Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal will be very much up your street. The show deals in similar measures of grisly horror and edge-of-your-seat suspense, with Mads Mikkelsen playing a younger Hannibal Lecter in his professional role as psychiatrist. If you’re a glutton for the macabre, you’ll certainly enjoy Hannibal. Through your headset you’ll come face to face with the motivations of a full-blown psychopath. Captivating stuff, but maybe another you should watch during daylight hours.
